Mindful breathing differs from the breathing that we do on a daily basis, 24/7, because we are actively working to be present in this moment, focused only on our breath and the sensations associated with the present. We breathe deeply and mindfully to distract ourselves from negative or destructive chatter in our minds, as well as to experience the physiological calming response that deep breathing invokes.
